Southern Alaska, United States. It was a 5-mile stretch across the glacier during which we had to travel in rope teams at all times due to crevasses. Have to go to the bathroom? Everyone just turns around.

It’s a three-day hike to get to Ascension, Alaska. This was the camp we set up the first night of the expedition, one night before we’d arrive at the base of the mountain. It was our first night setting up all the gear, so we were a little rusty. We were also very tired from the weight of the packs … our bodies hadn’t yet adjusted to our 80lb friends. It was really cool to actually hike through a cloud, and then hike a mile above it. The humidity just dropped as the visibility increased … beautiful.
