Easter Island, Chile. The rock from which these statues are carved is fairly soft and frail … the moai are literally falling apart piece by piece. They’re also incredibly weathered as, they are, hundreds of years old.

Easter Island, Chile. Why does sunset lighting make everything look so much more mysterious? The poet Pablo Neruda called these moai, “children of lava and wind / grandsons of ashes and air.”

Complete rainbows don’t seem too frequent. Where are the pots of gold? I took this shot from Easter Island, Chile. The rainbow arches over Motu Nui, the island that was part of the birdman competition many years ago.
